Moananuiākea Voyage – Leg 9: Ventura to San Diego

Bio

Hayley’s first time sailing on a waʻa kaulua was on a training sail on Hikianalia from Oʻahu to Lānaʻi. She feels honored to also now be sailing on Hōkūleʻa for this voyage, saying “Hōkūleʻa embodies the brilliance and resiliency of our kupuna, not only here in Hawaiʻi, but across Moananuiākea. She is our teacher and our protector.”

Hayley is a volleyball coach and marine biology research assistant. She says "I wanted to be a part of this voyage in the hopes that I can contribute to inspiring the next generation of “navigators” to continue to take care of our island earth. I am most inspired by the opportunities this voyage provides for us to learn more about our oceanic heritage; weaving a lei of experiences and stories together that will help us all to continue to grow in our capacity to help heal the planet.” She hopes that through voyaging, partnerships and collaborations are “made to continue to protect and preserve both natural and cultural resources.”

When Hayley is out at sea, she says she most misses “time together with my family and cats.” And when she is back in her every day life she misses “being completely surrounded by nature and of course being around the amazing people I get to sail with!”
