Bio

Kana is a veteran crew member, having first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in 2002 while a graduate student at the University of Hawaiʻi studying coral reefs. In fact, in an interview with her alma mater Keio University, she said a friend had given her a book about Hōkūleʻa and that inspired her to come to Hawaiʻi. Once here, she went to see “makuahine” Hōkūleʻa, who was in dry dock at the time. Kana started volunteering and helping to care for her.

Kanaʻs first voyage was from Kauaʻi to Midway in 2004. Then in 2007 she voyaged from Micronesia to Okinawa and even wrote a book published in Japan called “Hōkūleʻa: The Path Guided by Stars.” She has since published several books.

Kana is also an ocean photographer and a valuable member of our documentation team both for her skills in taking still photos and video, as well as her descriptive updates and blogs from the canoe, always with a sensitivity and respect for the ocean and nature she deeply loves.
