PVS Invites Public to Share Hōkūleʻa Memories
In celebration of the 50th birthday of Hōkūleʻa, the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) is inviting the public to become a part of this historic milestone by sharing their personal remembrances, stories, photos, or videos that honor the history and impact of the legendary canoe.
“We want to honor not only Hōkūleʻa, but also the people and stories that have shaped her legacy,” said Nainoa Thompson, CEO of PVS. “Every memory, every photograph, every moment shared with Hōkūleʻa is a part of her story, and we invite everyone to contribute to this celebration by sharing theirs.”
The Polynesian Voyaging Society is specifically seeking:
- Personal stories of interactions with Hōkūleʻa or the crew.
- Photos or videos taken during her construction, launch, voyages, dockings, or community engagements.
Community members can submit their Hōkūleʻa 50th remembrances (pictures, videos, and stories) at this link.
Submissions will be collected as part of a special 50th-anniversary project, which may include a digital archive and exhibits honoring the legacy of Hōkūleʻa. Selected submissions may also be featured on PVS social media and storytelling.
Since her launch in 1975, Hōkūleʻa has been a beacon of cultural revitalization, environmental stewardship, and the rediscovery of traditional Polynesian wayfinding. Over the past five decades, she has voyaged across the globe, connecting people and communities through the spirit of exploration, education, and aloha. This 50th anniversary is not just a celebration of the canoe, but a celebration of the countless lives she has touched along her journey.
The 50th birthday celebration includes a series of events planned in March, bringing together past and current crew members, navigators, cultural practitioners, educators, and the global community that has supported Hōkūleʻa’s mission over the years.
As Hōkūleʻa continues her legacy through the current Moananuiākea Voyage, this anniversary serves as a reminder of the resilience and the unifying power of voyaging.
