Te Hirihiri O Te Raa
Three days in Aotearoa honoring 40 years! Te Hirihiri O Te Raa will celebrate the birth of the Māori voyaging legacy and the Hawaiian Tribe Ngāti Ruawāhia, the sixth tribe of the Te Tai Tokelau region.
On November 14th, welcome the arrival of Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia at Te Tii Bay, Waitangi, marking the 40th anniversary of Hōkūleʻaʻs first arrival to Aotearoa in 1985, which helped spark a Māori voyaging renaissance and forged a deep kinship that has lasted through the decades.
On November 15th, witness the unveiling of a carving representing Ngāti Ruawāhia at Te Tou Rangatira, and an honoring of the late Sir James Henare, Pwo Navigator Sir Hector Busby and Hawaiian Leader Myron Pinky Thompson.
And on November 16, an observance will be held on Moturua Island, one of the earliest sites of Polynesian settlement.
These events are hosted by Te Tiriti o Waitangi Marae in collaboration with Kamehameha Schools and the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
