Salt Spring Island
It’s strange to somehow spend so little and yet so much time in one space when out on a voyage. As we walk down the Main Street of Ganges Harbour we see familiar faces as they wave to us and ask us how are days are going. New friends offer to take us on hikes to local wineries, to use their barbecue or laundry anytime, or play with their small alpaca herds just down the way. In many ways you can feel how the aloha spirit that William Naukana brought to these shores so long ago still persists here. Especially through the numerous bags of fresh produce, wild berry cider, and spearfished salmon gifted to us over our many days here. You can feel how the summer heat brings a rush of life into these waters and islands as bushels of blackberries line the streets as we walk. The sunsets here are exquisite. The hues are lighter pastels rather than the deep hues of home but seem to display the entire color scheme under cloudless skies. As we eat crew dinner of spaghetti on Hōkūleʻa I enjoy a last sunset across the bay. I’ll admit there’s a lot I’ll miss about this place and I’ll never forget Salt Spring. Mahalo to all those who made us feel at home there. Fair winds and following seas. A hui hou, mālama pono.
