Bio

Allen’s first experience sailing on a waʻa kaulua was on Hawaiʻi Island’s voyaging canoe Makaliʻi. He has now sailed aboard Hōkūleʻa several times and says she “represents a proud seafaring tradition of Pacific island peoples and the source of the Hawaiian renaissance. She is our sacred Kupuna and carries all those who have voyaged before us.”

Allen is a motion picture technician and he is grateful to be a part of the Moananuiākea Voyage as he says sailing on Hōkūleʻa has been a dream of his since childhood: “To be a voyaging practitioner/crew member aboard Hōkū is an incredible honor and a dream since I was 9 yrs old.” He looks forward to being a part of cultural exchanges, and bringing “awareness to Pacific Indigenous science, observations” and he hopes it inspires “future generations to protect the planet and oceans, and to practice Pacific culture with pride and dignity.”

When voyaging, Allen says he misses “time with daughter Ember, cold beverages, ice cream.” And when back on land, he misses the “raw natural environment of ocean and stars and motion of the ocean.”
