Kelly’s first experience on a waʻa kaulua being inter island from Honolulu to Lahaina. He is a physician who has since served as a doctor on the waʻa.
For Kelly, Hōkūleʻa is “a window to our past and future.” He says he is “inspired by the people that I’ve connected with at PVS” and by the Moananuiākea Voyage because “it’s the part of our culture that seeks to connect with the rest of Oceania and the world.”
When he is voyaging Kelly says he misses his family. And when he is back on land, in his everyday life, what he misses about being at sea is “the night sky and the camaraderie of my crew mates.”
