Bio

Growing up in Hauʻula, Levi’s first time sailing on a waʻa kaulua was on board Iosepa in 2016 off Lāʻie.

Levi is a teacher, sailor and architectural technician, and to him Hōkūleʻa means “cultural revival, traditional technology, seamanship.” For him, voyaging is an opportunity to preserve and strengthen these. It’s also a chance to “build meaningful relationships, expand ʻohana waʻa to new people and places” as on the Moananuiākea Voyage. He says he also hopes to “become a better sailor and learn navigation.”

While out at sea, Levi says he craves pizza, ice cream, friends and family, and “being at liberty with my time.” But being back on land has him missing “the feeling of being out there, and participating in something significant. Being fully at the mercy of nature. Watching the weather and conditions transform constantly. Spotting land after a long voyage. Building relationships among the crew. The music.”
