Bio

Mahinalani first had the opportunity to sail on a waʻa kaulua off of Lahaina, Maui. She sees Hōkūleʻa as “the resilience of Kanaka ʻOiwi, it is our history, our heritage and our kuleana to preserve.”

Mahinalani is a Data and Research Coordinator at Papa Ola Lōkahi, which is a non-profit that aims to improve the health status and wellbeing of Native Hawaiians and others by advocating for, initiating and maintaining culturally appropriate strategic actions aimed at improving the physical, mental, and spiritual health of Native Hawaiians and their ʻohana and empowering them to determine their own destinies. She says she hopes to see voyaging inspire “collaborative projects, cross-cultural education initiatives, non-profit partnerships, overall inspiration and ideas!”

On the Moananuiākea voyage, Mahinalani looks forward to engaging “compassionately with other communities. Learn of other indigenous values, principles, societal conflicts, and methods of advocacy/leadership. Moananuiākea will connect and strengthen indigenous people. I look forward to the growth and learning, individually and as a collective.”

When out at sea, Mahinalani says she misses “my garden and yoga routine!” But when back in the routine of her everyday life on land, she craves the “tranquility” at sea, she says, and “the vastness and pure magic of the realm of pō, night sky, and the hōʻailona that prevail throughout the voyage.”
