Moananuiākea Voyage – Leg 15 | Hōkūleʻa: Rarotonga to Aotearoa

Bio

Max is a landscaping and contracting business owner who also gives back to the Micronesian community here in Hawaiʻi and in Micronesia where he was born and had much of his childhood. He grew up sailing on the wa’a in Micronesia, but his first time on a Polynesian wa’a kaulua was in Aotearoa in 1992. He has been on many voyages, often the first to spot the island, including in 1999 when Hōkūleʻa voyaged to Rapa Nui.

To Max, Hōkūleʻa is “a canoe of hope for indigenous peoples to share and spread knowledge throughout the world.” He wants to be a part of sharing “the beliefs and messages of indigenous people.” What he says he also loves about voyaging and why he looks forward to the Moananuiākea Voyage is the self-discipline required.

What Max misses the most when he is voyaging are his grandchildren. And what he craves about voyaging when he’s back in his everyday life is “bringing the world together.”
