Moananuiākea Voyage – Leg 4: Ketchikan to Prince Rupert

Bio

Mikeʻs first experience sailing on a waʻa kaulua was on Hikianalia when she sailed to Lalo in Papahānaumokuākea in 2021. Mike is an Exhibit Designer at Bishop Museum and brings a unique perspective: having created exhibits about voyaging, to now voyaging himself. He says “Hōkūleʻa is a torchlight of knowledge from previous generations.” He would like to see voyaging “train people to better live with themselves and each other, to always strive to be the best they can be.”

Mike feels fortunate to be a part of the Moananuiākea: Voyage for Earth, as he sees Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia as “creating a lei of indigenous knowledge threaded by the voyaging of canoes to care for the ocean.”

When out at sea with duties as a voyager and as a canoe documenter, he craves the “luxury of doing whatever I please” from his everyday life on land. And yet the beauty of being at sea that he misses when back in his land-based life, is “the constant striving to be the best version of me possible.”
