Moananuiākea Voyage – Leg 6: Vancouver to Seattle

Bio

It wasnʻt long ago that Hulukoa first sailed on a waʻa kaulua. It was in March of 2022 with Kānehūnāmoku Voyaging Academy on Oʻahuʻs windward side. And now Hulukoa sails as a crew member on Hōkūleʻa, “The source of rebirth and reawakening for the people of Hawaiʻi,” he says, calling her “My Tūtū Waʻa and Kumu. A sacred person of great importance, joy and love. One of the things I hold most dear in my life.”

Through voyaging, Hulukoa strives “to become the best I can be in every capacity. To grow as a mariner, navigator, Hawaiian, and as a man. To know where I've come from and how to get where I'm going in life.” Many of his heroes are Hōkūleʻa crew members and so he feels “honored” to be voyaging in Moananuiākea and to help represent and spread the message of Aloha and Mālama Honua around the ocean that I grew up loving with my every essence”.

He misses his ‘ohana when sailing but he says they know “this is where I love to be.” And they know that when heʻs back home, he misses “sailing, the waʻa, the sky, sea, wind, and motion of the ocean.”
