Moananuiākea Voyage – Leg 9: Ventura to San Diego

Bio

Noah is a graduate student who first sailed on a waʻa kaulua in Hawaiʻi in 2020, but his relationship with Hōkūleʻa goes much farther back, saying “Hōkūleʻa is one of the links that I have to my ancestors.” And so it is a personal mission of his to “really ingrain as much waʻa-related knowledge as I can.”

Noah aspired to be a crew member on the Moananuiākea Voyage because “I would like to experience this to get a better understanding of what our Polynesian ancestors went through when exploring the Pacific,” he says.

Noah says he has never been at sea for more than a day, so he isn’t sure what he would be craving about his life back on land, but he can imagine. He says “I crave paddling my canoe every day when I'm in my office, so I presume that will be what I crave.” He is looking forward to also finding out what he craves once he is off the waʻa and back in his every day life. “I have yet to find out,” he says, but “I believe it will be the different connection to the ocean that can be experienced when on a waʻa.”
