Moananuiākea Voyage – Leg 9: Ventura to San Diego

Bio

One would say Ryanʻs first time ever sailing on a waʻa kaulua was an epic one. “I had the privilege of sailing aboard Hōkūleʻa while we passed beneath the iconic Golden Gate Bridge,” he says. Ryan is a filmmaker and cinematographer and was documenting the Leg 8 arrival into San Francisco in September 2023. He then answered our call to serve as documenter for Leg 9 - Ventura to San Diego.

“I want to be part of Moananuiākea because I believe itʻs my kuleana, to use my filmmaking skills to share Hawaiian and indigenous stories with the world,” Ryan says. “Our voices are needed, and I want to contribute to make a difference.” He believes that “Hōkūleʻa represents more than just a sailing vessel; it embodies hope and the promise of a better future for our generations to come.”

When asked what he would like to see accomplished by voyage, he said “I want others to hold the oceans in the same deep regard as we do, recognizing the urgency to protect them.” Ryan says he knows heʻll miss “my crazy corgi and being on the beach with my family” while on the voyage. But as far as what heʻll miss about being at sea when back at home? He says “Weʻll find out!”
